Dental extraction errors

When a dentist fails to carry out any dental procedure to acceptable standards the result may be pain and suffering during and following treatment. As well as the treatment itself not being effective, any incompetence may lead to associated medical complaints. If you have experienced unacceptable dental treatment you should claim dental negligence.

What is a dental extraction?

Simply, a dental extraction, or exodontia to your dentist, is the removal of a tooth from the socket (alveolus) in the alveolus bone. A tooth will be extracted if you have an overcrowded mouth, or if there is an infection or risk of infection. Before the procedure the dentist should administer a local anaesthetic to numb any pain. He/she may also use stitches at the end of the procedure to deal with bleeding.

What happens if the dental extraction is administered incorrectly?

In many cases there could be damage to the area surrounding the location of extraction. This could include the gums, the palate, surrounding teeth and even the jawbone. If the diagnosis was incorrect you may have lost a tooth you did not need to loose.

When would the Dentist's professional expertise be in question?

  • If the dentist delays the extraction of the tooth which then leads to further complications
  • If the dentist diagnoses wrongly that the tooth should be extracted or, conversely, if the diagnosis is right, but the wrong tooth is extracted.
  • Unforeseeable damage caused to surrounding teeth
  • Damage such as a facture suffered to the jaw bone
  • Damage caused to the palate
  • Severing of lip or gums
