Dental abscess diagnosis and treatment errors

It is the duty of your dentist to diagnose all current medical conditions associated with your mouth and teeth. If your dentist fails to highlight a condition and treatment is delayed the symptoms may exacerbate or create irreversible long-term problems with dental hygiene and care.

What is an Abscess?

In its simplest form an abscess is a collection of pus which largely contains dead tissue and bacteria. The usual cause of an abscess in the mouth is an infection with bacteria. The bacterium creates toxins which in turn damage the body tissues. In order to defend itself the human body creates white blood cells to do battle with the bad germs. This again creates tissue damage and a cavity is eventually formed which fills with pus.

How should an abscess be treated?

In some cases an abscess can be surgically removed. Treatment of an abscess is traditionally through the use of antibiotics and/or by draining of the abscess when diagnosis is made.

What happens if the abscess is not treated correctly?

If the abscess is not treated the abscess continues to grow and could cause further harm and injury. By definition an abscess could also spread and affect other parts of the body.

When would the Dentist's professional expertise be in question?

  • If there is a delay in diagnosing the abscess.
  • Failure to provide an on-going course of relevant antibiotics.
  • Failure to drain the abscess or inadequate draining of the abscess
  • When errors are made during the surgical removal of an abscess.
  • Using alternative dental procedures which do not result in the termination of the abscess.
  • Other errors of incompetency during treatment of the abscess
